There’s a new indoor football team set to make its home at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The team will be called the Carolina Cobras, competing in the National Arena League in 2018. The league’s second season begins in April.
This is a new NAL franchise, joining the Massachusetts Pirates and Jersey Flight with that distinction.
Others in the league are defending champion Jacksonville (Fla.) Sharks, Columbus (Ga.) Lions, Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Steelhawks and Monterrey (Mexico) Steel with the previously announced expansion franchises Jersey Flight (Trenton, N.J.) and Massachusetts Pirates (Worcester). A Portland, Maine, team is also expected to join.
“We are excited to have arena football return to the coliseum and look forward to working with the NAL and the Cobras’ ownership group and staff,” Greensboro Coliseum Complex managing director Matt Brown said.
Greensboro has had past arena teams in other leagues. They’ve been called the Greensboro Prowlers of the arenafootball2 league and the Greensboro Revolution of the National Indoor Football League.
The Carolina Cobras might sound familar. That was the name of the Arena Football League team that was established in 2000 and played in Raleigh before moving to Charlotte more than a decade ago. That team folded after the 2004 season.
This team is unrelated to that operation. The NAL is based in Atlanta.
The coach for the new Cobras will be Billy Back.
Back has coached teams such as the now-defunct Wichita Falls Nighthawks of the Indoor Football League, the Nashville Venom of the Professional Indoor Football League, the Texas Revolution of Champions Indoor Football, and the Cincinnati Commandos of both the Continental Indoor Football League and United Indoor Football League.
His record as a head coach is 82-27, according to information from the team.
Back played six seasons in the Indoor Football League. He’s a former college baseball player at Miami of Ohio.
