InstantScouting 2016 U Sports All-Canadian Interview: Qadr Spooner

Qadr Spooner, a senior student studying Social Work at University of McGill has been a major key in the improvement of the team’s success and has earned a spot on the InstantScouting 2016 U Sports All-Canadian Team.

Hailing from Brossard, Quebec, Spooner was invited and noticed at the College Gridiron Showcase in Texas (CGS), held from January 7 to 11, 2017. This must-see event is the annual evaluation and training camp of the best college players in the Collegiate athletics. This year, no fewer than 111 recruiters from the 32  NFL teams and 9 CFL teams were on hand.

Spooner, a former Greenfield Park Packer and Vanier College Cheetahs, who was also a U Sports(CIS) East-West Bowl participant, was the lone representative for Canadian university athletes at the College Gridiron Showcase.

QS: Qadr (Ka-dar) Spooner

InstantScouting: What is your Height/Weight?

QS: Height 6’4, Weight 315

InstantScouting: What is your position? 

QS: Tackle / Guard

InstantScouting: Where are you from? 

QS: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

InstantScouting: Who is your biggest inspiration? Why?

QS: My mother is my biggest inspiration; influenced someone in life, who’s showed me how to manage life even when time gets hard. She is not a person with selfishness and greed. she help shaped my personality, and characteristics. My mother was very ambitious, patient and such a loving person as a single mother raising four children

InstantScouting: What are you looking to get out of your collegiate football experience?

QS: I am hoping to play a sport I love, as i could. I also hope to play for a professional league and repay all the people who invested in me from a young age.

InstantScouting: What legacy do you want to leave when you are done playing college football?

QS: I want leave the legacy of someone is hardworking leader who does all the right things both on the field and off the field. .

InstantScouting: What separates you from other players at your position?

QS: I play with tenacity, and I experience at right and left guard. I consistently open lanes on the first contact when trapping. I dominate when I win on the first contact. People know me for my nastiness in drive blocks, latching on and churning my legs to push my man back a few yards.

InstantScouting: List 3 things you feel you need in order to be successful in football?

QS: 1. I think you need to be responsible over everything you can control.
2. I feel you need to be hardworking leader who does all the right things both on the field and off the field.
3. I personally think it is important to be a good representative in your community. I feel i need to try to improve a society’s overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. As a Social work graduate from McGill University I value social justice.

InstantScouting: Which pro football player would you compare yourself to? Why?

QS: Zack Martin; because Zack Martin Seals running lanes. Can combo block and fit on linebackers. Athletic to pull and trap. Passes off stunts and is alert to blitzes. Further; I think we both play very competitively.

InstantScouting: What is your greatest strength?

QS: I have good feet and heavy hands, and have the ability to stop a defender. I am best suited as a Guard as I am able to use my strengths in a short area of play. I demonstrate good power in down blocks and trap plays. I am at my best in a gap or man scheme. I am also able to absorb most power rushes.

InstantScouting: What do you feel you need to improve in the most?

QS: I want to improve my body composition. I would like to lean up and improve my overall core strength and lower body flexibility. I would like to provide a greater focus on my football work and angles on run blocks. I would dike to get a better bend at my knees and roll my hips, don’t waist bend. in my pass pro, keep a plat back and stay square with my punch. Overall, I would like to polish my technique.

InstantScouting: What interesting fact would you want the world to know about you?

QS: Honestly, I am a people person, I like to socialize. I like to help people out. As a young person, I had a lot of people that guided me in the right direction, I always wanted to pass that on through community work. I chose social work as my major to support fight against social issues.

InstantScouting: What would you want professional teams to know about you?

QS: I am a guy that comes from very little, that’s very hungry and plays with a chip on my shoulder. I know how to dominate opponents and the drive to dominate is constantly on my mind. I am interested in getting better as a football player everyday. .
